Other Info
Sebastian was born to a poor family in Pittsburgh. Sebastian Shaw's power first manifested shortly after he was accepted to engineering school and his father died. Shaw devoted himself to his studies and created Shaw Industries, becoming a millionaire by age 30 and a billionaire by the age of 40.

Eventually, Shaw fell in love with a woman named Lourdes Chantel, and was soon initiated into the Hellfire Club along with Warren Worthington Jr. and Howard Stark. Soon, Shaw rose to the position of "Black King," and gathered mutant associates to his side, including Emma Frost and Tessa. Unfortunately, Chantel was soon killed by Sentinels in a later battle. When Shaw discovered that Edward Buckman (the "White King" of the Inner Circle) was supporting Stephen Lang's Project: Armageddon and its Sentinels, Shaw decided to execute a coup. Shaw used Frost's telepathy to make Buckman kill his own "White Queen" and then himself. With Buckman out of the picture, Shaw appointed himself Black King, and Emma Frost as White Queen of the Hellfire Club. Sebastian kept the mutant nature of the Inner Circle secret from the rest of the Hellfire Club. Along with Emma Frost, Shaw used the organization's connections to further his goals of world domination through political and economical means. Shaw had to overcome many attempts to usurp his leadership, including a challenge from renegade colleague Donald Pierce (the White Bishop ) and overt hostility from Selene (the Black Queen). Shaw was also a key part of the corruption of the Phoenix Force into the Dark Phoenix (To learn about the characters, project, and/or team above, just click on their highlighted names. Shaw’s Hellfire Club was destroyed when his son, Shinobi, amassed a private fortune of his own and bought out Shaw Industries from under his father's feet. Shinobi phased his hand into his father's chest to induce a coronary. Shaw was then supposedly blown up in his Swiss Mountain retreat by a bomb set off by his son. Taking Shaw's ring as the symbol of his victory, Shinobi announced his triumph and claimed his father's place as Black King of the Inner Circle of the Hellfire Club. However, Sebastian did not die. He spent some time recuperating and building back his resources by allying with his company’s Asian counterparts. Once he built up enough resources, he forcibly took back Shaw Industries. He also began rebuilding the Hellfire Club, using Tessa, Selene, and Holocaust. (To learn about Shaw's son and/or Holocaust, just click on the highlighted names above.)

Later, after Tessa revealed that her years of service were all a cover for Professor X to keep tabs on Shaw and the developing Sentinel technology, Sebastian was determined to have revenge. He tried to frame the X-Men, for a murder of a Australian crime lord. However, the X-Men exposed Sebastian’s plot, with the help of the Red Lotus. After some time, Sebastian Shaw took on the title of the Hellfire Club’s "Lord Imperial," and he approached Sunspot to offer him a place in the Club's Inner Circle. However, once again, Donald Pierce appeared to challenge Shaw's title. The ensuing battled ended with Pierce decapitated and Shaw severely injured. Shaw decided to step down to allow Sunspot to become the Lord Imperial. (Click on the highlighted name above to learn about Sunspot.)

Shaw was one of the few mutants to retain their powers following M-Day. (To learn about this event, just click on the highlighted name above. Note: Beware of the revealing outfits worn by some in the main picture on the M-Day bio page.)

More recently, Emma Frost (now with the X-Men) decided to kill Shaw; however, her plans are exposed when Shadowcat accidentally picks up her thoughts during a psi-conversation between her and Colossus. While disgusted at Frost's intended actions, Shadowcat offers her a compromise. As she currently exists as a ghost, Shadowcat is the perfect tool for making Shaw disappear. Therefore, Fantomex, Shadowcat, and Emma Frost eventually take Sebastian Shaw aboard E.V.A. while they figure out how to dispose of him. After a long questioning by Frost, Fantomex becomes bored and drops the floor from under Shaw cause Shaw to fall to the earth below. Frost goes into a rage at Fantomex (he was unaware that Shaw could absorb kinetic energy, such as that from hitting the ground from such heights). Shaw then proceeds to engage Frost's group, stating that he would rather die than see Emma go on breathing a moment longer. Helped by a maimed Fantomex, the former White Queen tricks Shaw into allowing her into his mind. As opposed to killing him, Frost wipes many of Shaw's memories. From that point on, Shaw's attitude changed, and he seemed to have no recollection of who he was, where he was, or the identities of anyone around him. Emma Frost coldly tells Shaw that he always said he was a "self made man" and now is his chance to prove it. She then leaves with the rest of her expedition, leaving a Shaw kneeling in the mud. Sebastian Shaw's powers in the movie were similar to that in the comics. However, he re-channeled the energy into blasts of energy (more like Bishop) in the movie, than using it to enhance is strength, speed, and stamina in the comics.

  1. I thought it was interesting that, in the movie, he told Emma Frost to not hurt mutants, but he mentally and emotionally destroyed Magneto... did he have a change of heart?

  2. Probably not. Villains seem to never be consistent--killing some, manipulating some, ignoring some, etc. That's what I think.

  3. I have to ask, is there a reason why he dresses like he's in Colonial times? It looks like he is really old but has no anti-aging powers.

  4. From what I have found, the name "Hellfire Club" originated with 18th century gentleman's clubs; therefore, it is similar to the Marvel comic version. Because of that, Marvel's version of the Hellfire Club adheres to an 18th century dress code. The members of the Hellfire Club don't wear that style of clothing in the "X-Men: First Class" movie; however, they do in the cartoons.
