Typhoid Mary is a mutant and possesses a number of psionic powers. Due to her mental illness, Mary's powers differ on which personality is "in control."

She has telekinesis which allows her to levitate people and can project a telekinetic shield or force field. She can also release devastating force blasts. With this power she can fly at great speed. She can levitate small objects over short distances (such as weapons of under 10 pounds; knives, razors, etc., which her "Bloody Mary" persona often gathered and assembled into improvised battle-armor).

Mary is also a powerful pyrokinetic. This gives her the power to create, control, and absorb fire within line of sight.

She also posses telepathy. This allows her to implant mental suggestions in the minds of others. Mary can induce sleep in weak-minded individuals and most animals. She also has the power to seduce and make others fall in love with her using her mind. However, certain individuals are mentally resistant to her hypnotic powers.

Each of Mary's personas have a different heart rate and voice pattern; even Daredevil's super-senses were long unable to tell the different personas all belonged to the same woman.

As Mutant Zero, Mary appears to possess the same psionic powers utilized by both "Typhoid" and "Bloody Mary." It is unknown whether the powers possessed by this personality are stronger than those of the "Bloody Mary" personality.

Abilities
Typhoid Mary is in excellent physical condition. She has peak human reflexes and agility, and is highly athletic. She is also trained in martial arts, particularly Judo and Zen-Sword. She has exceptional skill in wielding and throwing bladed weapons, and is usually armed with a variety of machetes and smaller knives.

Mary Walker is mentally ill and is not entirely responsible for her actions as a result. Suffering from dissociative identity disorder, Mary Walker has 3 other abnormal personalities in addition to her seemingly healthy one. Her "Mary" personality is a timid, quiet, and pacifist; her "Typhoid" personality is adventurous, lustful, and violent; and her "Bloody Mary" persona is brutal, sadistic, and hates all men. Mary once claimed that there was a fourth personality, who is "lost," but it has not since been mentioned. The Typhoid Mary personality seems to be the craziest and most lustful of all her personalities, where Bloody Mary seems to be the strongest and most unstable. (When the Typhoid personality takes over, Mary gets a high fever as though she was sick, however, she becomes far more athletic than timid Mary Walker. She can also unconsciously call upon all of her personalities at will, but Mary can not recall anything that "Bloody" or "Typhoid" do.) Bloody Mary says she only hurts men who hurt women; she sees herself as a feminist fighter that is fighting for the rights of women that can't protect themselves. Mary's condition was accidentally caused by Matt Murdock (before he became Daredevil). Matt had tracked a villain down to the brothel where Mary worked. He attacked the man, but to his surprise, the girls working there came at him. Panicking, Matt lashed out, knocking Mary out a window. It was at this moment Mary became Typhoid Mary, vowing no man would ever hurt her again. However, she would later imply that she was a victim of child abuse. Mary was soon hired as an assassin by the Kingpin to bring down Daredevil. Kingpin wanted to play a cruel game with Daredevil by have Mary charm him as Mary Walker and tormenting him as Typhoid. Interestingly, her "Mary" personality had a romantic relationship with Daredevil, but her "Typhoid" personality had a romance with the Kingpin. During this time, she hired Bushwacker, Bullet, Ammo, and the Wild Boys to assist her in attacking Daredevil. This attack nearly killed Daredevil. Later on, through hypnosis, her abnormal and psychotic personalities were suppressed and Mary Walker's consciousness gained dominance. At that point, she had begun to lead a normal life, even becoming a soap opera star. However, she sometimes struggled to keep her multiple personalities under control. It was during this time that she befriended Mary Jane Watson. And at one point, her Bloody Mary persona resurfaced and battled with Spider-Man. During this time, Bloody Mary began killing men who committed domestic abuse. But, with Spider-Man's help, Mary was able to regain control and was able to voluntarily turn herself in to the police for treatment. Sometime later, Mary was confined to a mental institution. At the institution, each personality hired a mercenary: Mary Walker hired Deadpool to kill her, Typhoid Mary hired Deadpool to break her out, and Bloody Mary hired Vamp/Animus to break her out to resume a killing spree. Because of the different requests, Deadpool ended up fighting and defeating Vamp/Animus, but refused to kill Mary Walker, allowing the Typhoid personality to become dominant. Following this, Typhoid and Deadpool had a few adventures together until Deadpool attempted to reform Typhoid. This did not go well and the two eventually separated. Later on, the abnormal personalities came back and Mary confronted Daredevil in his secret identity, Matt Murdock, and set him on fire. However, Dardevil's bodyguards (Luke Cage and Jessica Jones) managed to take Mary down. She was then imprisoned on the "Raft" (a maximum security prison for super-powered criminals). Later, Electro led an attack on the Raft, helping the prisoners break out. But, while the Avengers came on the scene and managed to stop some of the prisoners, Mary was one of the prisoners that managed to escape. After the events of M-Day, Mary was one of the few mutants to retain her powers. But, she was not initially included in the official record of the remaining mutants (the 198). At some point after the events of the superhuman Civil War, Mary was found by Henry Peter Gyrich and was recruited into the Initiative program. (The reason why she actually joined the Initiative was later revealed that she couldn't merge or block out her four personalities, so she offered to join in exchange for a pardon and to help integrate her fractured mind.) Technically not existing in any official capacity, Mary's true identity was made classified and she was given the codename of "Mutant Zero."(As Mutant Zero, Mary was equipped with a suit of full body armor that appears to enhance her physical strength and given her an arsenal of weapons, including guns and various blades.) However, according to Dr. Leonard Samson, Mutant Zero was still mentally unstable and that referencing any of her other identities could lead to a period of instability. Eventually, Mutant Zero was inducted into the Initiative's black ops team (Shadow Initiative); but, due to her mental instability she could only be "activated" once per mission. Recently, Mary answered Daredevil's call for superheroes to join him and The Hand in providing martial law for an ever increasing area of New York City. She claims that her time as Mutant Zero appears to have finally joined all the aspects of her personality together, putting her completely in control of herself and her powers; however, Daredevil does not believe her. In the Elektra movie, Typhoid does not have the same abilities as she does in the comics. In the film, her breath or touch kills whatever they come into contact with. Her poison touch spreads vastly throughout an area at will, killing life, and she can poison her weapons by breathing on them.

Henry Peter Gyrich is a ruthless and dedicated government official known for his hardball tactics. Although he is very career minded, he once took a year off work to care for his father who eventually died of Alzheimer’s disease.

At one point, Henry Gyrich became the National Security Agency's (NSA) liaison to Canada's Department H. During this time, he met and had repeated issues with their agent, Wolverine. (To learn about the NSA and/or Wolverine, click on the highlighted names above.)

After this, Henry Gyrich became the first person to be given the title of U.S. Government Liaison to the Avengers by the NSA. After working with the Avengers for a time, Gyrich eventually revoked the Avengers priority status after taking issue with the team. Unfortunately, the Avengers had to accept Gyrich’s “suggestions” or they would be denied the use of their Quinjets, monitors, and data files. Gyrich also limited the Avengers’ active membership to seven members, forced the African-American Falcon to join the team (against Falcon's will) to satisfy equal-opportunity employment in accordance with affirmative action policies, and installed various security measures for the team. Later, Gyrich took part in a Senate investigation involving the Avengers which claimed that the team was a threat to national security. However, after various testimonies, the committee concluded that the Avengers needed a certain amount of freedom to carry out their operations which were of proven value to the government. The Senate committee gave the Avengers new guidelines to follow, and they also named Raymond Sikorski (a much more reasonable man) as Gyrich's successor as liaison. After he was forced to step down from his position, Gyrich continued to give the Avengers trouble as a seated member on the council that prosecuted them for treason (charges that proved to be false). He later continued to give them trouble when he served with the Commission on Superhuman Activities (CSA), who stripped Captain America of his uniform and title. Later, Gyrich requested for a transfer in his responsibilities and was made a special consultant to Project: Wideawake (a covert governmental commission to deal with the problems posed by the growing number of mutants in America). Project: Wideawake was headed by National Security Advisor, Judge Petrie, and its members include Frank Lowell of the Central Intelligence Agency, Raven Darkholme (Mystique in disguise) of the Defense Department, and Dr. Valerie Cooper, among other security department representatives. The project noted that America no longer had a virtual monopoly on superhuman mutants, and decided to investigate the feasibility of employing a special team of mutants to counter the threat of foreign mutants. Eventually it is Mystique's Brotherhood of Evil Mutants who were drafted to fill this position and were renamed Freedom Force. Sometime later, Gyrich became involved in war efforts against the alien Dire Wraiths. This time, he worked alongside Forge (a mutant who worked as a weapons maker for the U.S. government and S.H.I.E.L.D.). Gyrich took Forge's specially designed superhuman power-neutralizing gun to capture the mutant Rogue (she had broken into a S.H.I.E.L.D. facility). In an encounter with Rogue, Storm, and government forces, Gyrich accidentally shot Storm with this gun resulting in Storm's powers and abilities being neutralized (she regains them later). After sometime, Henry Gyrich is promoted to succeed Dr. Valerie Cooper as the head of the Commission on Superhuman Activities. Gyrich's dislike of superhumans made him the perfect target for Baron Strucker (who had designed nanites that could place any person under his control). Under the nanite influence, Gyrich used CSA resources to remold the vigilante Nomad into the assassin "Scourge" and devised a plot to destroy Earth's superhuman population. However, the Thunderbolts revealed Gyrich's involvement and ended his plot, freeing him from the nanites. Following that incident, he is reassigned to the U.S. State Department and is made the liaison for Black Panther as well as the Avengers’ new liaison to the United Nations. During this time, he redeemed himself in the eyes of the team when he refused to deliver information on the Avengers to the Secretary of Defense, Dell Rusk. Gyrich proved himself even more when he helped the Falcon unmask the Secretary of Defense as the Red Skull. Gyrich was a faithful liaison officer to the Avengers. After the superhero Civil War, Gyrich served as the Secretary of the Superhuman Armed Forces; his base of operations appeared to be Camp Hammond (the superhuman training facility in Stamford, Connecticut). Abusing his power, he created the Shadow Initiative which is a black ops team within the 50-State Initiative consisting of Bengal, Constrictor, Trauma, the Scarlet Spiders (Team Red) and Mutant Zero. After the Skrull invasion, Gyrich has now been appointed Co-Director of the U.N. space security agency known as S.W.O.R.D. His focus is on potential alien threats already on earth. Henry Gyrich is in the first X-Men movie. In the film, he is Senator Kelley's assistant and is assumed to have been killed by Sabretooth--much different than the comics.

Stick possessed a "proximity sense" that enabled him to perceive the shapes and locations of objects in his vicinity despite his blindness. The limits of his "proximity sense" are unknown, but it was more acute even than Daredevil's "radar sense." This sense may have possibly been psionic in nature. Stick's enhanced hearing enabled him to hear faint echoes that sounds created as they "bounced" off the objects around him. Stick's senses of taste, touch, and smell were also more acute than those of ordinary human beings. Stick claimed that he developed his senses to their heightened levels through training and practice. He also possessed the ability able to channel and use his Chi for various effects.In addition, he could communicate with others through telepathy. Stick also could mentally drain life energy from another person into his own body, thereby killing that person, causing the victim's body to dissolve. It is not known what other mental powers Stick possessed.

Abilities
Stick was a master of various Oriental martial arts. Despite his blindness, he was extraordinary in hand-to-hand combatant and would play in combat against both Daredevil and Elektra, as they could not gain an advantage on him. He can move in silence (even Daredevil's radar and enhanced hearing could not detect him). Currently it seems Stick can appear in spirit or ghost like form as he aids his students.

Very little has been revealed about the past of the man known as "Stick." He was born blind, but developed the acuteness of his other senses to levels far beyond those experienced by most human beings. These heightened senses, including his so-called "proximity sense," compensated for his inability to see.

Stick became the master of an elite order of warriors known as Chaste (who made their base atop a mountain in an unidentified location). Apparently, Stick earned his name from the Bo staff (as well as a pool cue) that he utilized in combat. The Chaste's members also developed mental abilities of either a psionic or mystical nature, such as the power to communicate telepathically. It was required of the Chaste that they rid themselves of destructive emotions, such as hatred. For years, Stick's warriors battled against the Hand (a Japanese-based criminal organization of ninjas who acted as mercenaries and assassins and who served the demonic entity known as the Beast.) For centuries The Chaste and The Hand have battled one another in a legendary secret war that stretches back to feudal Japan. Later on in New York City, a kid named Matthew Murdock was accidentally bombarded by radiation from a canister of radioactive waste materials. This unknown radiation blinded him, but also mutagenically heightened his other senses. Sometime after young Murdock was released from the hospital, Stick found him. Stick taught Matt how to control his newly heightened senses and guided him in mastering his so-called "radar sense," which resembled Stick's own "proximity sense." Sometime later, after her father's death, Elektra Natchios went to Japan, to continue her study of martial arts. After achieving great prowess in the marital arts, the sensei told her about Stick's order in the hope that Stick could teach her how to achieve peace of mind and spirit because she was filled with hatred towards the world for the death of her father. Stick accepted Elektra as a pupil, and she was trained by him for a year. During this time, she improved her combat skills even further and also began learning to develop and use the same mental powers possessed by the members of The Chaste. However, Stick eventually expelled her, since she was unable to rid herself of the destructive emotions that had filled her since the murder of her father. Almost prophetically, Stick feared that his decision to turn Elektra away may lead her to seek training with darker forces such as the Hand. Stick's fears proved to be true, because it was this expulsion that drove Elektra to join the the Hand, and afterward to become an independent assassin.

Sometime later, the concussive force of an exploding bomb caused Daredevil to lose his radar sense temporarily. Daredevil found Stick, who was operating as a pool hustler in New York City. Under Stick's guidance, Daredevil developed his radar sense once again.

Later on, the Hand had finally began to try to eliminate the Chaste once and for all. (At this time the Chaste consisted of seven members, including Stick himself). After successfully stopping an attempt by four members of the Hand to assassinate him, Stick summoned the other members of his order to meet with him in New York City. However, only three members met with Stick: Claw, Shaft, and Stone. (It is presumed that the Hand slew the other three members.) Together, Stick and his three followers battled and defeated Kirigi, who was perhaps the Hand's deadliest warrior. (To learn about the highlighted warriors above, just click on their names.)

Soon after, over forty ninja warriors belonging to the Hand attacked Stick, Claw, Shaft, Stone, and their allies Daredevil and Black Widow. Claw was killed in the course of the battle. During the battle, Stick realized that he and his allies could not possibly survive against such great odds using conventional means of combat. Therefore, to defeat the Hand's warrior's and to save the lives of Daredevil and the Black Widow, Stick resorted to a strategy that he knew meant sacrificing his own life. Stick and Shaft linked hands and presumably through mystical or psionic power, began draining the life forces of their enemies into their own two bodies. Once deprived of their life forces, the bodies of the Hand members dissolved away. Stone asked to join his master in performing this ritual, but Stick instead told Stone to take Daredevil and Black Widow to safety. Finally, Stick and Shaft's bodies filled with more human life forces than they could contain, and their bodies seemingly exploded. Thus Stick and Shaft each met a heroic demise. Marvel Madness Update

I hope you all have enjoyed learning about different superheroes, villains, and other supporting characters in the Marvel Universe. I wanted to give you an update. When I began this blog, I mentioned that I will be getting most of my information from Marvel.com, due to there being many different "sources" out there about Marvel characters. While this is still true, it is becoming more and more difficult to find enough information on just Marvel.com for the lesser known characters. Jameson is an accomplished reporter, editor, and businessman, knowledgeable in virtually every aspect of print publication. He demonstrates surprising fitness, though he is subject to fits of rage, has had multiple heart attacks, and is a chain smoker of cigars. His brusque behavior, capitalistic outlook, and obsession with Spider-Man frequently mislead people into believing him less principled and compassionate than he in fact is.

John Jonah Jameson was raised as a child by David and Betty Jameson. David was an officer of the United States Army, a war veteran decorated as a hero. However, at home, David regularly abused his wife and son. It was later clarified that David Jameson was in fact Jonah's stepfather, and the brother of J. Jonah Jameson Sr. (Jonah's biological father). J. Jonah Jameson Sr. had to leave his son behind for undisclosed reasons.

J. Jonah Jameson Jr. was a Boy Scout during his childhood. In high school, his interests were mainly boxing and photography. Jonah met a girl named Joan when they both joined their high school's photo club. When the school's three top athletes started bullying him, he fought back and beat all three. This impressed Joan, and they started dating.

J. Jonah Jameson began his journalism career as a paperboy, then copy boy for the Daily Bugle. Jonah quit high school after becoming a reporter. At twenty Jonah uncovered police corruption. After that, he became a full-time Bugle reporter, including a time as a war correspondent, criticizing most costumed heroes as glory-seeking vigilantes upstaging the common man. Later, Jonah married his high school sweetheart, Joan. Jameson rose to editor-in-chief and became renowned for supporting civil rights and opposing organized crime. When Daily Bugle owner William Goodman's heirs put the Bugle up for sale, Jameson tapped his last dollar and made the newspaper his own. He worked hard to support his wife and their son John, eventually becoming a millionaire member in New York's elite Century Club. Still a reporter at heart, Jonah went to Korea for a story, but was crushed when his wife was killed by a masked gunman in his absence. This and other self-perceived failures contributed to his distrust of masked heroes and the heroic ideal.

After some time, when Spider-Man became a crime fighter, Jameson vowed to expose him as a publicity-seeking con. Even after his son, John, was rescued by Spider-Man in a space flight disaster, Jonah still had hatred for Spider-Man. (Click on the highlighted name above to learn more about Spider-Man.)

Jonah hired Dr. Farley Stillwell to mutate investigator Mac Gargan into the "Scorpion" to defeat Spider-Man; however, the debacle left Stillwell dead and the insane Scorpion hating Jameson. Plagued by guilt, the Jonah confessed his actions to his friend Norman Osborn. Scientist Spencer Smythe soon offered Jameson the first of many Spider-Slayer robots, with which he battled Spider-Man to a standstill before Spider-Man escaped. J. Jonah Jameson has been attacked and/or had made enemies with multiple villains. Including Scorpion, some of those are Venom, Kingpin, Grizzly, Fly, and Hobgoblin. After some time, Jonah had begun dating Dr. Marla Madison. Their relationship progressed and the two were eventually married. Jonah and Marla also adopted their niece, Martha "Mattie" Franklin, who unknown to them was Spider-Woman. (To learn about the Spider-Woman, click on his name above.)

J. Jonah Jameson pressured his staff into supporting the government's Superhuman Registration Act. When Spider-Man unmasked himself to reveal himself as Peter Parker, Jonah was shocked and felt betrayed. On top of the Parker revelation, he had to deal with his son Jon marrying the She-Hulk. Franklin "Foggy" Nelson is the son of Rosalind "Razor" Sharpe, a ruthless attorney who deserted her husband not long after their son was born. Foggy rarely saw his mother during his youth; therefore, he was raised by his father and stepmother. However, his mother's career motivated him to study pre-Law at Columbia University, where he quickly befriended his roommate, Matt Murdock (aka Daredevil). Murdock, despite his blindness, occasionally used his physical skills to protect Nelson from campus bullies (Foggy was not aware of Matt's superhumanly enhanced senses). During their time at college, Matt began dating Elektra Natchios. Foggy disapproved, because he thought she was dangerous (which turned out to be extremely true). They hired a secretary, Karen Page, which both Foggy and Matt fell in love with. Unfortunately for Foggy, only Matt's love was reciprocated. Foggy was unaware of his Matt's double-life for many years, despite his suspicions regarding Matt's frequent exits and physical injuries. Although their friendship has endured numerous trials, such as Foggy's appointment as District Attorney, Matt's descent into paranoia due to the actions of the Kingpin, and, of course, Matt's dedication to his alternate persona. However, the two remained friends and confidantes, even after Foggy's relationship with Debbie fell apart which resulted in a divorce.

At one point, Matt's secret identity as Daredevil was revealed by the media and he was eventually arrested. When this happened, Foggy went to visit Matt in prison with private investigator Dakota North. At the prison, Foggy was stabbed and seriously injured by several inmates. Matt heard his friend's heartbeat slowly cease, and Foggy was declared dead sometime after the ambulance took him away. However, sometime later, it was revealed that Foggy had not actually died, but was put into the Witness Protection Program. During this time, he went by a new name. A little later, Foggy and Matt were finally reunited. Afterward, with the help of fellow lawyer, Becky Blake, they managed to clear Matt of all charges. Recently, Foggy and Matt's friendship has once again become strained due to Matt's alter-ego and his irrational behavior (such as ignoring his responsibilities to the firm). But, it is only after Matt makes a deal with the Kingpin that Foggy's patience reaches its end. Emotionally hurt and morally perplexed that Matt would make a deal with the man who had caused them both such pain in the past, Nelson ends up firing Murdock from the firm. Later, Foggy expresses remorse at this decision because he worries that Matt's new role as Leader of the Hand has resulted in him taking on a new murderous attitude. Some of you may have already notice this, but the actor (Jon Favreau) who plays Foggy Nelson in film Daredevil is the same actor that plays Happy Hogan in Iron Man and Iron Man 2 (he is the director of the Iron Man movies too). Handsome and naturally athletic, Eugene Thompson seemed to have a bright future ahead of him. Unfortunately, his father (popular policeman Harrison Thompson) had a secret drinking problem. Alternating between anger and despair, his father took out his frustrations on the family, often treating Eugene abusively. Eugene, in turn, became a neighborhood bully, taking out his own frustrations on weaker and less popular children, including Peter Parker. Eugene was a football prodigy. He became one of the most popular, and conceited, students at Midtown High School, where his speed on the football field earned him the lifelong nickname "Flash." Flash Thompson had a big circle of friends, which included Liz Allan (Flash's steady girlfriend for some time). The more popular Flash became, the more he mocked the shy Peter Parker. However, as Parker (secretly emboldened by his new spider-powers) became more confident, he began to stand up to Flash more often, and even took on Flash in a boxing match that ended with Flash being knocked out by a spider-strength jab that most onlookers misinterpreted as a lucky sucker punch. Despite being knocked out by Peter, Flash continued to mock Peter. Gradually, Flash's girlfriend became impressed by Peter's maturity and sick of Flash's bullying that she dumped Flash and began showing strong romantic interest in Peter. Shortly after Spider-Man first appeared, Flash declared himself Spider-Man's biggest fan. Flash even founded the Forest Hills chapter of the Spider-Man fan club and took it upon himself to defend Spider-Man's reputation (sometimes even in reckless and foolish ways). One time, Flash impersonated Spider-Man in an attempt to teach Peter Parker some respect for the hero, and he was mistaken for the real Spider-Man and was imprisoned by Doctor Doom. Later on, when another Spider-Man impersonator tried to tarnish the hero's name with a string of petty crimes, Flash unmasked the culprit as his own friend Jason Ionello (who wrongly blamed Spider-Man for the recent death of their mutual friend Sally Avril during Spider-Man's battle with the Black Knight). Flash also repeatedly denounced the many anti-Spider-Man tirades by Daily Bugle publisher J. Jonah Jameson. When Flash and Peter graduated from Midtown High, both were awarded full scholarships to Empire State University (for athletic and academic achievement, respectively). By this time, relations between the two had begun to thaw ever so slightly, and both soon became part of a circle of friends that included fellow students Gwen Stacy, Harry Osborn, and Mary Jane Watson. During his tour of duty, Flash was stationed in Southeast Asia, where he stumbled across a hidden temple whose residents (notably the beautiful Sha Shan) nursed a wounded Flash back to health. However, after American forces mistakenly shelled the temple despite Flash's efforts to protect it, Flash left the Army to return to America. Back in America, some temple survivors who mistakenly blamed Flash for the tragedy made attempts on his life. However, with the aid of Spider-Man, Flash lived to convince the temple survivors of his innocence, and was briefly reunited with Sha Shan. Sometime later, Flash's old friend Betty Brant was struggling to cope with her failing marriage to reporter Ned Leeds (who had secretly been brainwashed into serving as a pawn and occasional stand-in for the criminal Hobgoblin--aka Roderick Kingsley). Betty sought comfort in the arms of Flash, and soon the two were having a secret affair. Sha Shan realized this and walked out on Flash after a violent argument. The unstable Ned Leeds suspected the truth as well, and Flash unwittingly provoked matters further when he insulted the Hobgoblin on television. The Hobgoblin responded by framing Flash as the supposed Hobgoblin, sending Flash to prison. In prison, Flash was supposed to be killed by the vigilante Scourge, but once again Spider-Man saved the day. Escaping jail, Flash sought refuge with Betty Brant but was attacked by the Hobgoblin, who fled after Betty saw him unmasked as Leeds. Shortly thereafter, word of Ned's double identity leaked out and Leeds was murdered by assassins hired by his rival Jason Macendale (who used Ned's gear to become the new Hobgoblin). Aiding Spider-Man in battle with the new Hobgoblin, Flash suffered an arm injury that ended any hope of restarting his old sports career, but he was cleared of all charges related to the Hobgoblin case and set free. Ned's death sent Betty into a nervous breakdown, and she fell under the influence of a sinister cult known as the "Students of Love." Flash, Spider-Man, and Reverend Tolliver joined forces to liberate Betty and deprogram her. Having lost all her worldly possessions to the cult (which was destroyed in a fire), Betty took up residence with Flash for a short time. But, soon afterward, Betty and Flash decided they were better off as friends rather than lovers and parted as friends. By this time, Peter Parker had married Mary Jane Watson, and Harry Osborn had married Flash's old girlfriend, Liz Allan. So, being the odd-man-out Flash was determined to find a new love of his own. For a while, he dated Felicia Hardy (aka Black Cat), but ultimately broke up with her since he felt he could never fit into her exotic lifestyle. Directionless, lonely and increasingly bitter, Flash developed a drinking problem like his father had, leading to a car crash that got Flash arrested again and cost him his job as a school gym teacher. By this time, Flash had begun blaming much of his troubles on his family in general and his father in particular. However, after a violent confrontation with his father finally, Flash realized that he had become a wreck like his father was, and that only he himself could take responsibility for fixing his life. Flash finally sobered up and started trying to turn his life around, though without much success in terms of either romance or career. But, luck struck when wealthy industrialist Norman Osborn offered him a good job with his company (Osborn had actually done this as part of an elaborate plot against his enemy Peter Parker in hopes of turning Flash against Spider-Man, though Flash remained loyal to his boyhood idol despite Osborn's influence). Later, when Norman Osborn stepped up his attacks on Peter, he staged a car crash that sent a company truck crashing into Midtown High with Flash at the wheel, and made it look as if Flash had been driving drunk. Flash was knocked unconscious, but eventually revived. Unfortunately, he was broken in mind and body--he was in a wheelchair and trapped in a speechless haze. Flash was visited regularly by old friends such as Peter Parker and Liz Allan Osborn (now Harry's widow), who used her wealth to provide Flash with an apartment and full-time medical care.

Eventually, Flash recovered, and went back to P.S. 108 (the New York City public school numbering for Midtown High) in Forest Hills as a coach. He has partial amnesia, remembering events up through high school. Therefore, he has forgotten his years of friendship with Peter Parker and had returned to mistreating Peter until Spider-Man's public unmasking shifted his attitude.

Long time companion of Howard the Duck, Beverly Switzler first met Howard when they were both taken captive by the mad financial wizard Pro-Rata, who intended to use the two of them to retrieve the missing gem-key to the Cosmic Calculator in a bid to become Chief Accountant of the Universe. Thrown into a dimensional portal, Howard and Beverly worked together to retrieve the gem-key and return to Pro-Rata’s tower where Howard defeated Pro-Rata with assistance from Spider-Man. Afterward, Beverly offered Howard to come and live with her. The two became close friends. They struggled to make ends meet, with Beverly posing as a model for life-drawing classes to pay the bills. Beverly and Howard the Duck even had to face extraordinary obstacles together, such as Turnip-Man (Beverly’s space turnip possessed roommate), Winky-Man (their narcoleptic vigilante upstairs-neighbor), and Le Beaver (the Canadian Super-Patriot). However, in spite of all their struggles, their relationship grew and eventually they fell in love.

At one time, Beverly and Howard became separated for a time after a former college classmate of Beverly’s, Dr. Bong, abducted them and held them captive on Dr. Bong’s Island. Revealing his long standing obsession for Beverly, Dr. Bong demanded Beverly’s hand in marriage in exchange for Howard’s life. Beverly agreed to the marriage in order to save Howard. During her forced marriage, Beverly used her time in the castle to create five infant clones of Lester, naming them the "Bong Quintuplets." Beverly eventually confronted Doctor Bong and threatened to ruin his reputation by revealing to the public that he was a negligent father. Dr. Bong decided to let Beverley go. Later, Beverly and Howard spent Thanksgiving at Charles Xavier's Massachusetts Academy, where they encountered Artie Maddicks, Leech, and Franklin Richards.
