Hildegund possesses the conventional attributes of an Asgardian woman. Like all Asgardians, she is extremely long-lived, aging at an extremely slow rate upon reaching adulthood, superhumanly strong, immune to all Earth diseases, and resistant to conventional injury. Asgardian flesh and bone is about three times denser than similar human tissue, contributing to the gods' superhuman strength and weight--the average female god can lift about 25 tons. Their metabolism gives them superhuman endurance in all physical activities.

Hildegund's origins have not yet been revealed; however, she did often went by the name "Gudrun" instead. But, what is known about her earlier life is that at one point she married fellow Asgardian, Volstagg. The two lived happily together and had a large family of ten sons (Alaric, Arngrim, Einar, Gunnar, Hrolf, Leif, Rolfe Svein, Sigfod, Thakrad) and four daughters (Flosi, Gudrun, Gunnhild, Jargsa ) along with others whose names have not been revealed. At one time, when Volstagg returned from battle, Hildegund only got a quick peck from her husband before their children jumped on him and forced their father to tell them how he stopped the enemy single-highhandedly.

At one point, a parasitic/symbiotic magical creature known as Zaniac used human hosts to kill. However, before Thor could stop Zaniac, he had killed a human woman named Ruby. This left her two sons--Kevin and Mick--without parents. Realizing this, Thor took the two boys back to Asgard to Hildegund and Volstagg. He knew the two boys would be loved and protected by them. When the boys first meet Volstagg, they thought he was Santa Claus. Thor assured them that while Volstagg was not Santa Claus, Volstagg was "a friend to children everywhere." Hildegund is credited as "Volstagg's Wife" in the film, Thor: The Dark World. She appears briefly in a scene with their children where Volstagg is telling stories to everyone.
