A U.S. Army Ranger in Afghanistan, Phil "Cheese" Coulson battled alongside his friend Marcus Johnson.
Later on, Coulson helped Johnson as he was being pursued by Taskmaster, Deadpool, Captain America, and Orion for unknown reasons. (However, Orion was trying to use Johnson's blood to regain his immortality). However, during these events, Coulson was knocked out and left behind by Johnson in order to protect his friend. While separated, Johnson discovered that he was actually the son of Nick Fury. At this point, Coulson's goal was to save his friend's life, so he enlisted Captain America, the Avengers, and S.H.I.E.L.D.. (Click on the highlighted names above to learn about the different characters and/or teams.)
Soon after, Coulson and Johnson (now being called Nick Fury Jr.) joined S.H.I.E.L.D. and as agents reported to Director Daisy Johnson. One of the missions that the two worked together on was destroying the group known as Leviathan. (To learn about Quake, click on her highlighted name above.)
At one point, Agent Coulson accompanied Nick Fury Jr. to meet with a traveler from the future who described the origins of several superheroes before launching an attack on a battalion of S.H.I.E.L.D. agents. Coulson managed to disable the traveler. In response to the attack, S.H.I.E.L.D. Director Maria Hill decided to create S.H.I.E.L.D.'s own "Secret Avengers" team. Both Agent Coulson and Nick Fury Jr. joined the ranks of the team and were responsible for the recruiting their first members. Some of these first recruits were former members of the original Secret Avengers, Hawkeye, and Black Widow. (Click on the highlighted names above to learn about the team and/or characters. Note: Beware of the revealing outfits worn by Black Widow on her bio page.)
Due to the sensitive nature of their missions, every member (except Fury Jr.) received memory implants, making them forget everything they did for the period of the operations. Their first operation was to foil a plan of the terrorist group Al-Qaeda from using teleportation knowledge given by Andras Bertesy to execute a terrorist attack to the United States. On their second mission, the team rescued Taskmaster from Bagalia, in order to use him to infiltrate in A.I.M.'s new High Council which consisted of Andrew Forson, Graviton, Jude the Entropic Man, Mentallo, Superia, and Black Widow (Yelena Belova). However, during the confusion of a battle between the two groups that happened at a weapons expo, Forson stole an Iron Patriot armor, and the Secret Avengers, with the addition of Hulk, were given an order to go after Andrew Forson. (Click on the highlighted names above to learn about the team and/or characters. Note: Beware of the revealing outfit worn by Black Widow on her bio page.)

The "Phil Coulson" character was one of the only Marvel characters that did not originate in the comics. Phil Coulson first appeard in Iron Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (movies). It wasn't until 2011 that Phil Coulson entered into the main Marvel universe in the comic books.
He's one of my favorite characters =) He's got such a dry sense of humor- I love it =)
